Stretcher Design
Based on Medical Transport in Residential Building
- Concept design project cooperate with Beijing Emergency Medical Center.
- Focus on the challenge of medical transport in residential buildings: narrow environment like stairway and small-size elevator.
- Innovation of obstacle-navigation solution for stretcher.
Emergency workers in Beijing always find it difficult to transport patients in residential environment because of narrow corridors and early buildings without accessibility facilities like elevator. In these circumstances Beijing Emergency Medical Center come to us for a solution of medical transport in residential building.
Introduction
In the analysis part about medical transport situation, field research / document research are used.I participated the practical emergency work with medical workers and measured dimensions of several residential buildings.
Data and information of :
- First-aid process
- Early residential staircase
- Capacity of Elevator
- Capacity of Ambulance
are collected and visualized.
Design goals
Useful in ambulance/bed/ground:
- flexible support structure
- different stand mode
Go into small elevator:
- collapsible structure
- different posture for patient
Go upstairs and downstairs:
- obstacle navigation solution
- functional for staircase
- fast safe and convenient
According to previous studies, the most difficult part would be the design of obstacle-navigation solution. So in next phase I focus on developing different obstacle-navigation solutions for staircase based on exsiting technologies like electric pedrail / bionic robots.

conclusion
This project is the graduation project of my master degree.
In this project I focus on the realistic problem of medical transport in residential buildings, especially in narrow environment. At last I provide several solutions for medical transport by developing different stretcher cehicles with obstacle-navigation ability.
Further study of this design also involves professional knowledge of automation control / manufacturing / materials and other scientific disciplines. I hope this stretcher vehicle design can be helpful and promote the development of medical first-aid equipment design.
